Digital film smear multiple

The digital film smear series combine narrative elements with abstraction to show distorted fragments of reality. The breakdown of image through natural and electronic means is paramount to this investigation. These images can become entirely abstract. At other times, a sense of recognition pervades.

A digital copy of exisitng film stock is the basis for this work. The image is captured through a digital snap shot of the moving image using a film grab program. At the same time, the 'smears' are recorded as horizontal bands, indicating stopped movement and the passage of time. These electronic signatures simultaneously illustrate shifting perspective.

The digital smear multiples are digitally manipulated C-prints mounted between Plexiglas.
